Forget Me Not

One-year term project i worked on in a team of 7 people in which we had to create a video-game based on the theme of Alzheimers.
I was primarily responsible for lighting the house, as well as some minor modelling.

The scene was composed of the living room, kitchen, dining room and bathroom and a natural lighting.

It has been a big challenge for me, I didn't really have the right idea of how to approach the lighting as a whole in the beginning. I learned a lot through reaching out to the right people, as well as through my own efforts and determination to become a better lighting artist.
The most challenging part was to create a visually pleasing AND optimized scene. At first, my lighting was very heavy and inefficient which led to some framerate problems, so I decided to redo the whole thing while taking a different approach. I was told that I could technically light the scene with only a directional light and a skylight through indirect/bounce lighting, and adding more if necessary. I experimented with it until the end of the semester and this post is the result.

Initially it was challenging baking my static lights because it produced a lot of noise in the seams and shadows around modular meshes, even in production quality. This was an opportunity for me to troubleshoot the scene! To solve this, I tried many different combinations of those settings and kept track of the results. This means that I had a lot of baking to do, so I organized myself and several friends and colleagues to run some of the bakes on multiple computers. That way I could get results quicker, and modify our scene accordingly.

While stressful for many reasons, this experience has been very gratifying and I couldn't have ask for better team mates.
I'm proud of our project and I'm thankful for the people that have taken the time to help me, both teachers and collegues.

If you like the meshes, take a look at these amazing environment artists responsible for them!

Throughout this project, I paid close attention to the light complexity viewer. I wanted the lighting to be as optimized as possible. This is for the living room.

I focused on indirect lighting with the directional light. Here are the settings I used to get the level of bounces I wanted.

An exemple of the boards I would make when I started testing different combinations of lightmass settings to find what would work better for the scene.
